A new volume was conceived to respond—in an ambivalent manner—to the need to construct a windbreak for the Chapel of Saint Ignatius, while simultaneously endowing the entrance with greater dignity.
A specific volumetric form was defined for this entry, designed to function also as a vestibule serving both temples; the shape of the volume was carefully adjusted to screen from view the unremarkable underside of a series of stair slabs that had previously fragmented the space into two distinct parts.
Following our work on the interior, we were entrusted with overseeing the construction of this specific element. We executed the project in collaboration with Iñaki Sanz, who handled the timber structure, and Antonio Alves, who applied the lime finishes. The photographs were taken by María Azkárate; we sought her collaboration to include these magnificent images in a forthcoming book on recent religious architecture. We are deeply grateful to María for her voluntary participation and for the exceptional quality of her work.
